Stanley Cup Notes:

  • All time franchise stats are calculated since the 1979-80 season, based on the merger of the World Hockey Association with the NHL. At that point in 1979, the Edmonton Oilers, New England Whalers, Quebec Nordiques, and Winnipeg Jets joined the NHL and the rest of the WHA folded.
  • Conn Smythe Trophy does not necessarily go to a player on the Stanley Cup Winning team. Voting is done during the 2nd intermission of a deciding game. If that game ends up not ending the Stanley Cup, voting is scratched and started over in the next deciding game.
  • 1991-92 was the last season the conferences were named the Prince of Wales Conference (now Eastern) and the Clarence Campbell Conference (now Western).
  • The Stanley Cup is the oldest trophy in all professional sports in North America. The first cup, called the Dominion Hockey Challenge Cup, was first awarded in 1893. The current look of the trophy was designed in 1947 by engraver Carl Petersen. Rings are added to the bottom of the trophy as the trophy fills up. All the names of the players on the championship team are engraved on the rings of the trophy.
  • The Columbus Blue Jackets and the Seattle Kraken (founded 2021) are currently the only 2 NHL teams to have never made it to the Conference Finals.
  • NHL officially takes control of the Stanley Cup starting in 1927.
  • Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the 2020-21 season was reduced to 56 games. Issues with cross border travel also had an impact and all seven Canadian teams were put into one division for this season.
